Register today for Lenexa’s winter recreation classes

Enjoy the season by meeting new friends and learning something new in one of the City of Lenexa’s winter recreation classes.

With the variety of preschool, youth, adult and senior classes ranging from one-day workshops to monthly programs, there is something for everyone. The winter schedules include classes in music, art, crafts, dance, fitness, nature and more.

Here are samples of some of Lenexa Parks and Recreation’s course offerings:

Hatha Yoga
Increase strength, balance, coordination and flexibility through yoga. This class, taught by instructor Angela Schaffer, focuses on posture, alignment, breath and stamina for maximum relaxation. Sessions begin Jan. 12 and are from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the Community Center and 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturdays at the Senior Center. A six-week session is $66; four weeks is $44.

Personal Fitness Boot Camp
Regain energy, stay positive and love life in this total fitness program run by certified personal trainer Anashia Skanal. All fitness levels and body types welcome, however, expect high intensity and adrenaline. Classes begin Jan. 9 and are from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior Center. The six-week session is $75.

Senior Taxi
Lenexa offers a senior taxi service for residents who are 65 years and older, or for those who are disabled and cannot drive. The service is not wheelchair accessible. The program, offered by appointment from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, provides transportation within Lenexa as well as to local medical centers. The cost is $5 per person for each one-way trip, and there is a $2 application fee.

Young Explorers
Kids three to six years old can enjoy this nature-based class that includes art, songs, games and stories on rotating themes like “Penguins and Polar Bears” and “Red Robin Returns.” For 2012, the class is offered from 9 to11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for $8 a class. Both days are the same, so parents should choose to attend the one that works best for schedules. Classes can fill quickly; pre-registration is recommended.

Upcoming trip: Mall of America
It’s not too early to make plans for spring break. This year, grab the girls and head to Minnesota for a spring break shopping trip to the Mall of America from March 14 to 15, 2012. It’s a perfect getaway for friends, family or anyone who’s ever wanted to shop in more than 520 stores at the nation’s largest mall. View more details online.
