Park Shelters

Park shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis, unless they are already reserved. Shelter reservations begin on the first business day in January for each calendar year.

Rent a shelter

To rent a shelter, you must do so in person at either the Lenexa Community Center, 13420 Oak St. (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday) or the Lenexa Rec Center, 17201 W. 87th St. Pkwy. (8 a.m to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.)

  • You will be asked to pay applicable fees (see below) and sign a rental contract.

  • The resident rate applies to residents and businesses who pay Lenexa property taxes. If you would like to qualify for the resident rate, please bring a valid driver’s license or a photo ID and current utility bill in your name.

Rental times

We offer shelter reservations in the following time blocks:

  • Half day: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Half day: 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Full day: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Rental fees

When you rent a shelter, you are reserving the use of the shelter and its amenities only. This includes tables, grills, cement pad and fire pit. Playgrounds, open areas, courts and parking lots remain open to be used by other park guests.

Special event permit

If you would like to bring special activities, such as tents, inflatables (excluding Buffalo Meadows Shelter) carnival-type games, waterslides, piñatas, live animal shows, DJs or amplified music, you must first have prior approval and/or a special event permit.

Please adhere to the parking lot capacity when you are planning larger events. 


Alcohol policy

Alcohol permits are $15, and only Lenexa residents can apply for a permit. 

  • If you would like to serve alcohol during your shelter reservation, you may apply for a beer permit (3.2%, cans only).

  • You must be a Lenexa resident and at least 21 years old.

  • The permit will cover all guests at the shelter.

  • You must complete a beer permit application when you make your reservation.

  • If you are having 150 or more guests and would like beer at your event, you are required to have a Lenexa security officer on duty.

  • Alcohol is prohibited at Craig Crossing Park.


Other policies

  • Restrooms: Our park restrooms are open from mid-April through the end of October, depending on freezing temperatures. From November through mid-April, you will have access to portable toilets (exception: Matt Taylor Park). We unlock restrooms at 5 a.m. and lock them at 9 p.m.

  • Following your event, please make sure your shelter is clean and cleared of trash on the tables and ground. Please remove all decorations. Our staff will empty the trash and clean the grills after your event.

  • If you need to cancel your reservation, you must email parksandrec@lenexa.com at least 30 days before, or you will forfeit your fees.

  • We do not give refunds due to inclement weather. However, you can move your reservation date, if a new date is available.
