Outdoor Swim & Dive Lessons

We offer swim and dive lessons for all skill levels during the summer season. Summer pool programs will be available for registration beginning April 1. Once the Lenexa Rec Center opens, we will offer swim lessons year-round.

  • If you would like to watch your child’s swim or dive lesson, you must do so from the viewing area in the concessions stand.

  • Daily swimming and access to the baby pool is not included with swim and dive lessons.

Our group swim and dive classes have 5 to 8 students per class, depending on the level.

Levels

We recommend you place your child in the level they last completed. It is easier to move your child up a level than it is to move them down a level.

  • If your child can complete all of the skills in a level, place them in one level higher. If they are unable to complete all the skills in that level, they are in the appropriate class.

  • Our instructors will conduct a skills assessment on the first day of class to verify your child is in the right level. If your child needs to move levels, the instructor will notify you of their recommendations within the first two days of class.

Swim lesson levels:

  • Parent/tot – Ages 6 months to 3 years. Your child will work on exploration on their front and back, water contact with their face and head and overall comfort in the water.

  • Pre-beginner – Ages 3 to 4 years. Your child will get acquainted with the water and basic water skills, submerging their head, supported front and back float, kicking and front crawl movements while promoting fun and enjoyment in the water.

  • Level 1 – Your child will get acquainted with the water and basic water skills, submerging their head and retrieving objects, supported front and back float, kicking and front crawl movements. There is no pre-requisite for this class.

  • Level 2 – Class teaches beginning swimming skills, including rhythmic breathing, kicking and floating without support, front and back crawl stroke, treading and introduction to deep water. Your child must be able to complete Level 1 skills.

  • Level 3 – Class increases lengths in the front crawl stroke with rhythmic breathing, backstroke, elementary backstroke, diving from the side of the pool and increased endurance treading. Your child must be able to complete Level 2 skills.

  • Level 4 – Class teaches techniques and endurance in the front crawl stroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke and treading. Open turns and breaststroke will be introduced. Your child must be able to complete Level 3 skills.

  • Level 5 – Increases endurance in front crawl stroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and treading. Teaches the sidestroke, front and back flip turns, surface dives, and diving skills and introduces the butterfly. Your child must be able to complete Level 4 skills.

  • Level 6 – Your child will perfect stroke techniques and improve their technique in diving and overall endurance. They will learn rescue skills and water safety skills. They must be able to complete Level 5 skills.

  • Stroke development – For advanced swimmers. Each session is targeted to a particular stroke and will focus on individual stroke techniques and corrections to make a more confident swimmer, increase efficiency and decrease disqualifications in swim meets. Your child must be able to complete Level 5 skills or be a swim team participant.

Dive lesson levels:

  • Beginner – Your child will get acquainted with basic diving skills and techniques – both on land and on the 1-meter board. They must be able to swim and recover without assistance and feel comfortable entering the water head first.

  • Advanced – Class works on technique and prepares your child for competition.
