Certain types of businesses may be allowed to operate from the home, provided the business is an accessory use that is incidental to the property’s primary residential use. In order to be approved, a home business must comply with criteria established by the City's Unified Development Code. It must be compatible with the general residential character of the neighborhood and not create excessive traffic, parking problems, noise or other negative impacts.
Getting started
To receive approval of a home business other than home day care, apply for a Business License/Home Zoning Permit from the Department of Community Development. If you apply in person at City Hall, you will generally receive immediate approval, provided that you submit complete information and comply with all requirements.
For more information about requirements and the application process, refer to the Starting a Business in Your Home brochure.
Fees
See the schedule of fees or contact City Hall.
Signs
A permitted home business is allowed one non-illuminated facade sign that is compatible in color with the house and is no more than one square foot in area. This sign must be mounted on or adjacent to the entrance to the home.
License expiration
Your business license is a one-year license and must be renewed annually. If the scope of your business changes at any time, please contact City Hall.
