Finance is responsible for all financial operations of the city insuring that statutory requirements consistent with established and generally accepted accounting and auditing procedures are met. Included in this operation is the administration, processing and accounting of the city's fixed assets, payroll, purchasing, revenue receipting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and the investments of funds for the city. Finance is responsible annually for the audit, budget, capital improvement program and the long range financial plan for the city. Finance also directs the issuance of municipal debt and industrial revenue bonds.

The City of Lenexa has been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its achievements in financial reporting and budgeting by receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting along with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, the city must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized comprehensive annual financial report. The city has been the recipient of this award since 1978. To receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the city must publish a budget document that excels as a policy document, an operations guide, a financial plan and a communications medium. The city has received this award since 1991.

The credit rating agencies of Moody's and Standard & Poor's have also affirmed the city's sound financial position in the metropolitan area by assigning the city an Aaa and AA+ bond rating respectively. The financial operation of the city is audited annually by a firm of independent certified public accountants. The accounting firm of RubinBrown LLP gave the city an unqualified audit opinion for fiscal year 2010.
