The Lenexa Fire Department is an Accredited Agency by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International and carries an ISO 1 rating. We strive to provide the best fire and emergency response service possible to our residents and businesses.

History

The Lenexa Fire Department began in 1907 as a citizen bucket brigade. The first official piece of firefighting equipment purchased was an 1878 soda acid extinguisher, which is still on display at Fire Station 1. In 1923, the Lenexa Fire Department was officially recognized as a city department with Lewis O. Krumm serving as the first fire chief. The department was all volunteer until 1969, when four full-time employees were added to the existing 32 volunteers.

Strategic Plan

Every five years, we participate in a formal planning process to provide focus and clarity in our pursuit of excellence. In September 2021, we invited external stakeholders to give us feedback about community priorities and expectations, areas of concern, positive feedback, and other thoughts. We used that feedback to guide our internal stakeholder work session and establish initiatives for the next five years.
