Trash & Recycling

All residential and commercial trash, recycling and yard waste collection is provided by private contractors that are licensed to do business in Lenexa. The City of Lenexa does not provide solid waste collection. Individual residents or homes associations must arrange for service with one of the city’s permitted haulers. While each company has its own prices and policies, the below information applies to all permitted companies.

Lenexa City Code Chapter 2-11: Solid Waste Regulations

  • Trash and recycling containers may be placed at the curb for collection no more than 24 hours prior to your designated pickup time.

  • All trash, recycling and yard waste must be stored behind the building line or inside the garage. If kept outside, it should be stored inside a container.

Trash

  • Residential trash must be collected at least once per week.

  • Haulers provide a solid waste container with a lid to all residential customers.

  • Johnson County regulations require that residential waste haulers utilize a volume-based rate structure for trash collection. Residents who wish to dispose of more trash than what will fit in the provided container will be charged an additional amount.

Contact your hauler for specific details.

Recycling

  • Residential recycling must be collected at least every other week. While haulers can choose to offer biweekly collection, they must offer weekly recycling collection to customers as well.

  • Haulers must offer an unlimited volume of recycling as part of their residential services. Contact your hauler to see what items are approved for recycling pickup.

  • Haulers provide a recycling container with a lid to all residential customers. The recycling container must be at least the same size as the provided solid waste container.

  • In addition to curbside recycling, there are many area drop-off recycling locations in the area. RecycleSpot provides a comprehensive list of recycling and reuse services in Greater Kansas City.

  • Glass may be recycled at Ripple Glass drop-off locations in Lenexa and the metro area.

Yard Waste

  • Waste haulers provide yard waste collection (leaves, branches, limbs, etc.) as part of the basic service charge for residential customers.

  • Yard waste must be disposed of separately from trash in a compostable container, such as a brown yard waste bag. Compostable bags are available at many retail locations, including hardware and grocery stores.

  • Tree limbs and brush must be securely bundled not longer than 48 inches, 18 inches in diameter and weighing no more than 65 pounds each, or loose in ridged containers weighting no more than 35 gallons in capacity. Contact your hauler for more details about what is accepted.

  • Yard waste is collected weekly March through November, and monthly December through February. Yard waste collection is limited to six bags or bundles per pickup, except during October and November, when the limit is 10 bags or bundles per pickup.

  • Yard waste can be disposed of at the city’s twice-yearly Dumpster Days.

Large Item Disposal

Waste haulers are required to offer their customers one bulky item curb pickup each year as part of their basic collection rate. Some haulers require residents to call and schedule their pickup date, while other haulers have set collection dates for certain areas of Lenexa.

Contact your hauler for its curbside collection of bulky items policy. This service replaced the city-sponsored Curbside Cleanup program, which is no longer held.

Large items (furniture, appliances, tires, limbs, etc.) may be disposed of twice a year at the city’s Dumpster Days.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste is any unwanted household chemical that can't safely be discarded in the trash or down the drain because it contains ingredients that are toxic, flammable, reactive or corrosive. Lenexa residents can dispose of paint, stain, yard chemicals and more at these facilities.
