Lenexa Chief Financial Officer Doug Robinson was honored as a 2019 CFO of the Year by the Kansas City Business Journal. Fourteen individuals were recognized at a ceremony on June 28, 2019. Doug was among five professionals honored in the nonprofit category.

Doug has worked in local government for more than 27 years, including 14 years with the City of Lenexa. He leads the Lenexa Finance Department where seven professionals manage an annual budget of $164 million. As CFO, he directs the City’s financial operations, including budget preparation and monitoring, capital improvement program preparation and monitoring, debt issuance, financial reporting, and investment portfolio management which includes the City’s pension fund. He also assists with the implementation and monitoring of economic development incentives.

During the awards presentation, Mayor Mike Boehm said, “The City of Lenexa is extremely lucky to have Doug Robinson leading our Finance Department. Doug is an outstanding public servant who cares deeply about the community we serve. His professionalism, dedication and extraordinary contributions have ensured the City remains in strong financial condition and will be felt for generations to come.”

“It is my privilege to serve the citizens of Lenexa, Kansas,” said Doug. “I work closely with the Governing Body and professional staff in an organization dedicated to providing high-quality services to our residents and business community. It’s an honor to be recognized with this award.”

Doug spearheaded efforts to improve Lenexa’s credit rating from AA to AAA from both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. These top-quality ratings are a rarity in local government and save thousands of dollars in interest when selling bonds to finance capital projects. He led a similar effort when he served as budget director for Johnson County, Kansas.

Lenexa has earned the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, from Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for 27 consecutive years. Lenexa has also earned the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for Lenexa’s comprehensive annual financial report for 40 consecutive years.

The Kansas City Business Journal said the honorees are “the best in financial management” and “are dedicated to their work and strive to innovate new strategies.”

Doug was named the 2007 Lenexa Chamber of Commerce City staff person of the year award for his work on economic development incentives and is a graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership Lenexa program.

He has served in each of the four officer roles for the Eastern Kansas Governing Finance Officers Association. He assists other local governments by reviewing their budget documents as part of the GFOA budget award program and providing suggestions for improvement.
