The Lenexa Arts Council (LAC) is a volunteer organization that was started in 1979 by a group of volunteers seeking to enrich children’s arts experiences. In 1980 it became an official city-supported board, and is now under the auspices of the Parks and Recreation Department. As Lenexa grew, the Arts Council expanded and formalized its organization and mission. It operates with a budget that is part city-allocated, part fee-based. Over the years, LAC has expanded its programs even more by winning grants from Kansas City Metropolitan philanthropic organizations.
The goal of the Lenexa Arts Council is to serve the community by stimulating an awareness in the arts for Lenexa residents. The Council coordinates resources to develop, sustain and promote high quality programs and events throughout the area. The Arts Council is composed of nine members appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. Members serve a term of three years from their date of appointment.
