7 reasons to license your pet

  • A license tells everyone that your pet is not a stray.
  • Licenses help link finders of lost animals with pet owners so their pets can be returned directly to them.
  • When you license your pet, you can list up to four emergency contact numbers, giving us a better chance of reaching you, a pet sitter or a family member if your pet is found.
  • When Animal Control finds a lost pet wearing a license, we make every effort to reach you at your emergency contact phone numbers so your pet can be returned home safely and as quickly as possible. Providing a license for your pet may prevent it from being turned into a shelter if it becomes lost.
  • If your pet is found and brought to a shelter wearing its license, the shelter will find you - but only if your pet is licensed.
  • A licensed animal will receive emergency medical treatment while in the care of Animal Control, if it is injured when found.
  • Licenses allow law enforcement to protect neighborhoods from dangerous dogs and investigate dog bites.

What pet owners need to know
According to Lenexa animal ordinances:

  • It is unlawful for any animal to run uncontrolled, or to disturb persons by chasing, charging, barking, growling or biting. The leash law applies to cats, as well as dogs. Outdoor cats are NOT allowed.
  • Dogs must be confined to the owner/keeper’s yard, unless the owner/keeper is outside, monitoring the animal on the property.
  • All dogs must be walked on a leash. This includes while in residential neighborhoods, city parks, apartment common grounds, along public walking trails, etc.
  • It is unlawful for any person to fail to clean up after their animal, if the animal defecates on public property or property owned by another person.
  • Neighbors may sign citations for excessive barking, which is disturbing their peace.
  • Dogs that are maintained outdoors must have access to proper shelter, food and water.
  • Animals may not be left unattended in vehicles for extended periods of time. The vehicle must be properly ventilated and the animal must have water.

Failure to comply with these ordinances may result in a citation. For more information, see the Animal Care and Animal Nuisance sections of the City Code, or contact the Animal Control Division at 913.477.7385.
