Rain Garden Workshop

Learn to plant a beautiful, eco-friendly rain garden and take home the plants you need to get started at an upcoming workshop.

Rain gardens, shallow depressions planted with native vegetation, are an attractive, low-maintenance way to fix drainage problems in your yard while improving water quality. Lenexa's Rain to Recreation staff will demonstrate how to build your own rain garden at a class on Sept. 5 from 7–8:30 p.m. at the Lenexa Municipal Services Service Center, 7700 Cottonwood St.

This interactive course will help attendees to a size, location and arrangement for their garden. Participants are welcome to bring a photo of their proposed garden site for personalized advice.

Plant packages

To help participants get their rain gardens started, we're offering plant packages of 38 plants grown in Lenexa's greenhouses for a $75 fee. These blends of native plants are easy to care for and require little fertilizer, pesticides or additional water. Plus, they attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Participants must select a package for either sun or shade:

  • Sun plant package: Wild Blue Indigo, Lanceleaf Coreopsis, Prairie Blazing Star, Butterfly Milkweed, Little Bluestem, Blueflag Iris, New England Aster and Penstemon

  • Shade plant package: Cardinal Flower, Lobelia, Swamp Milkweed, River Oats, Columbine, Rose Mallow and Blueflag Iris

If you're not sure which plant package to pick, contact Justin Stuedemann, 913.477.7678, or Ted Semadeni, 913.477.7814.

If you choose to purchase a plant package, 75 percent of the fee can be reimbursed through Lenexa's Cost Share Program. Participants will have the opportunity to apply at the event.

Each person planning to attend the class needs to register regardless of whether they want to receive a plant package.

Those who want to attend the class without purchasing a plant package can do so for free.
