City leaders are ready to start studying Lenexa’s recommended 2020-2024 Capital Improvement Program, with a review work session coming up and a public hearing planned for Nov. 19.

The CIP serves as a guide for planning, funding and scheduling capital projects over a five-year period. The CIP is reviewed each year, and projects may be added, removed or reprioritized during that time. The new CIP is typically adopted by the City Council each December.

Major CIP projects that will be completed by the end of 2019 include construction of Ridgeview Road from K-10 to Prairie Star Parkway and a new fleet facility. Ongoing projects such as the Pavement Management Program, stormwater infrastructure improvements and the playground replacement program are also included in the CIP.

CIP project funding comes from general revenue, dedicated taxes, impact fees, grants, bonds and other sources. Over the next five years, the CIP dedicates funding for:

  • Streets and bridges: $107 million
  • Public Buildings: $72 million
  • Parks: $7 million
  • Stormwater: $18 million
  • Major capital equipment and miscellaneous: $7 million

New projects recommended to be added to the 2020-2024 CIP include:

  • Sidewalk repair program: $1.5 million
  • Community and Senior Center improvements: $7 million
  • Cedar Station Park development: $892,000
  • Public Safety Complex: $60 million
  • Prairie Star Parkway & K-7 interchange improvements: $18.5 million
  • Complete Streets implementation: $790,000

The Governing Body will meet for its first CIP work session on Oct. 8 to review and discuss the proposed CIP. Members of the public are welcome to attend, but there will not be an opportunity to provide feedback during this session.

A public hearing for the 2020-2024 CIP will be held during a City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Community Forum at Lenexa City Hall. Members of the public can provide comments on the CIP during the hearing. Feedback on the CIP may also be sent to budget@lenexa.com.
