New SMSD Aquatic Center will draw visitors to Lenexa

New SMSD Aquatic Center will draw visitors to Lenexa

exterior of Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic CenterThe new Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center is projected to open by mid-December 2019. The City of Lenexa is excited to welcome this state-of-the-art facility to the growing Lenexa City Center neighborhood.

Expect to see a surge in visitors as the aquatic center draws local, regional and national swim and dive tournaments with high-caliber athletes to its Olympic-sized pool. The first intersquad meet takes place Dec. 7, featuring the five Shawnee Mission schools. Follow-up meets are scheduled for Dec. 13–15.

This $28 million, 55,000-square-foot aquatic center sits across the street from the Lenexa Rec Center at 87th Street Parkway and Winchester Street. It is a partnership between the Shawnee Mission School District and Johnson County Parks & Recreation District, which will operate the facility. The City of Lenexa donated the land to the school district. The aquatic center has easy interstate access from anywhere in the Kansas City metro and is a 30-minute drive from the airport, which is convenient for large regional meets.

Highlights of the new aquatic center include:
  • A 50-meter, eight-lane, cool-water competition pool that can be configured in various ways for competitions, practice and water polo.
  • A diving well with two 3-meter and two 1-meter diving boards.
  • A 25-yard, four-lane, warm-water instructional pool, part of which has a movable floor that ranges from zero inches to 7 feet in depth.
  • Ability to accommodate 600 athletes.
  • Bleacher seating for up to 1,000 spectators, with additional seating and viewing on the mezzanine.
A new 220-stall public parking garage — called the Winchester Garage — is located on the west side of the aquatic center. Anyone visiting Lenexa City Center can use the garage when there are no swim and dive tournaments. The City of Lenexa and Shawnee Mission School District share in the cost of the garage.

The City of Lenexa is working closely with its school district and county partners to ensure ample parking is available for the busy civic campus, which includes Lenexa City Hall, Lenexa Farmers Market, Lenexa Public Market, Lenexa Rec Center, Lenexa City Center Library and Park University. Thanks for your patience as we make adjustments to balance the changing traffic patterns during the next few months.
