Peace Poles Community Art Project

peace pole monumentA colorful exhibit of creative and unique 3D sculptures is coming to Lenexa, and community members are invited to participate. The Peace Poles Community Art Project — a series of poles designed by community members and adorned with original art and messages of peace — will be exhibited in Lenexa's Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park during the summer and fall of 2021. The purpose of the exhibit is to inspire peace, hope, creativity and community involvement.

The Peace Poles Community Art Project is organized as a partnership between the Lenexa Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Western Johnson County, the Lenexa Arts Council and the City of Lenexa.

What is a Peace Pole?

Peace poles are monuments that display messages of peace. This internationally recognized symbol of hope has been around for decades. The poles serve as a daily reminder that goodness comes from acts of kindness and that peace comes from goodness.

Rotary clubs across the country have placed peace poles in their communities as a reminder to strive to make the world a better place. The Lenexa Peace Poles Community Art Project aims to engage our community through creative works of art combined with positive messages of peace.

How to Participate

Residents, community groups, businesses and artists are invited to show off their creativity and share their messages of peace by submitting proposed designs for the Peace Poles Community Art Project exhibit. All levels of artistic expertise are welcome and encouraged to participate.

A jury committee will review all submissions and invite accepted participants to decorate their pole(s) for the exhibit. Blank 6-foot-tall wooden poles will be provided to each artist or group whose design is approved. Artists must supply their own paints or other decorative supplies.

Artists will have approximately six weeks to decorate their poles and turn them in for installation at locations throughout Lenexa. During the official exhibit period in 2021, signage placed at each peace pole in the display will recognize the artist or group that decorated the pole. An interactive map will also be created to show the locations of the peace poles for the public exhibit.
