Logan WaglerMore than 300 Parks & Recreation Department employees are responsible for maintaining Lenexa’s beautiful parks and recreation facilities, creating fun festivals and organizing engaging programs. The diverse work accomplished by these dedicated individuals helps make Lenexa a special place and lays a foundation for our sense of community. Later this month, a new director will step in to lead this important department.

City Manager Beccy Yocham announced that Logan Wagler will join her senior management team when he assumes the role of Parks & Recreation Department director on Nov. 30. Wagler has worked for Lenexa over the past 12 years, most recently as deputy director for Parks & Recreation.

“We are fortunate to have such an outstanding candidate within our organization,” said Yocham.” Logan is passionate about how recreation and green spaces can positively impact lives and is extremely dedicated to Lenexa.”

The appointment comes as current Parks & Recreation Director Gary Ristow prepares to retire after serving Lenexa for 12 years. “We are grateful that Gary brought his expertise to our organization,” said Yocham. “Under Gary’s direction, we were able to complete the City’s first-ever Parks & Recreation Master Plan. His strategic leadership helped build the professional department that serves our community today.”

Wagler has more than 21 years of professional experience with municipal parks and recreation agencies. He joined Lenexa as parks superintendent in 2008 and was promoted to his current role in 2013. Wagler recently served as staff co-chair for Vision 2040, our community-led visioning process. He was also an integral part of the project team that developed the civic campus, including the Lenexa Rec Center.

“I am extremely honored to be selected as Lenexa’s Parks & Recreation Director,” said Wagler. “Words cannot express my gratitude and excitement for this opportunity. I am continuously impressed with the staff and elected officials of this great organization. I look forward to working in partnership with the community to provide a high quality of life in Lenexa through our amazing parks, trails, facilities and wide range of recreational opportunities.”

Wagler earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst University and a master’s in public administration from Park University.

Well respected by co-workers from various departments, he was named Lenexa’s Employee of the Year in 2012.

Wagler serves on the Kansas Recreation & Parks Association (KRPA) Executive Board and currently leads the organization’s professional development initiatives.

He was also named to Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s State of Kansas Sports and Recreation Task Force and was one of the professionals offering recommendations for phased reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before joining Lenexa, Wagler worked for the City of Leawood, Kansas, and Blue Valley Recreation. He is a graduate of the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Lenexa program, the Executive Development Program through the University of Indiana, KRPA’s Tomorrow’s Leaders Institute, and the National Recreation and Park Association Recreation Maintenance Management School.

Wagler and his wife, Jennifer, live in Lenexa and have three children, Brooklyn, Landon and Keaton.
