Farmers Market Attendant Brenda VandenBos

Brenda VandenBos has been an integral part of the Lenexa Farmers Market since our first season. She helps set up early in the morning on Market days and keeps things running smoothly. She works closely with vendors to help them be as successful as possible, coordinates the menu for our Progressive Dinner, and so much more!

Brenda's positivity and enthusiasm to ensure the Market represents locally grown, raised and made products is widely appreciated. Learn more about why the Farmers Market is a great fit for her skills and interests.

Why did you want to be part of the Lenexa Farmers Market?

I was looking to reenter the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom. My background consists of growing up on a farm in northern California, then going to culinary school and working as a chef for many years. I love small businesses and farmers, which makes the Lenexa Farmers Market a perfect fit for me.

What has been most rewarding about the Market?

Working with the vendors. I have had the privilege of guiding some of our new vendors in the process of starting their business. I also enjoy the vendor visits to the farms. I love seeing the farmers on their land and experience their passion for what they do. I also love the loyalty of our customers; they are truly amazing.

What’s a favorite question you get asked by customers?

When are corn and tomatoes going to be at the Market?

What have you learned from working with Market vendors?

They have a true love and dedication for what they do.

What's something you'd recommend people try at the Market?

It is hard to pick one thing, but I think people should try something new every time they visit the Market. Maybe beets; fresh beets are amazing.

What really makes your day at the Market?

Seeing kids excited about shopping for local produce.

What do you do when you're not at the Lenexa Farmers Market?

Take my two energetic dogs on walks and home improvement projects.

Do you have a special talent or hobby?

I love houseplants and cannot have too many. I love to go to garage and estate sales. Our family takes road trips every summer, and we go out of our way to eat locally made ice cream every day. I do not do a vacation without finding local ice cream to eat.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I grew up on a turkey farm, which my brother still runs today. I went to culinary school in Vermont. I have sailed to Micronesia cooking on a catamaran and traveled with an Indy Race car team.

What's your favorite food?

Whatever is fresh, locally made and in season. However, I do love a fresh artichoke.
