Ellen Hanson, Retired Chief of Police

Ellen Hanson headshot photo.Ellen Hanson was the first female officer in our department’s history. She began her career as a patrol officer in 1975 as one of just a handful of female police officers in Johnson County. Ellen rose through the ranks of the Lenexa Police Department and in 1991 was named Chief of Police. Chief Hanson was the first female Police Chief in the Kansas City metropolitan area. In 2010, Chief Hanson was named the Woman Law Enforcement Executive of the Year by the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE).

Chief Hanson retired in 2012 after 37 years with the Lenexa Police Department, including 21 years as Chief of Police.
