Ready to drain your pool? Consider its chemicals.

Swimming pool and hot tub water contains many chemicals – including large amounts of chlorine – that are harmful to water quality and aquatic life. Once your pool water goes into the street or storm drain, it flows directly into streams and lakes.
Follow a few easy steps to properly dispose of your pool water.
- Stop adding chlorine to the water, and let the water stand for at least two weeks.
- Once you’ve tested the water to confirm it’s dechlorinated, you can use it to water your lawn and garden or drain it slowly to a curb, ditch or storm sewer.
- Monitor the pool to make sure the water is draining at the right speed and in the right direction. Don’t let the water flow onto a neighbor’s property or wash away soil.
