Benefits
Health, dental, prescription and vision insurance
Employees are offered two medical plans: Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or Qualified High-Deductible (QDHP); dental, and vision insurance with three options for coverage: employee only, employee plus one, or family. Coverage begins the first day of the calendar month following the date of employment.
Kansas Police and Fire Retirement System (KP&F)
Firefighters are members the first day of hire. Vesting is based on 15 years of service. This plan also includes long-term disability benefits, a KP&F death benefit and the optional additional term life insurance.
City of Lenexa supplemental retirement plan
The city contributes 4 percent of each employee’s annual salary into an employer-funded 401(a) plan. We may also contribute up to an additional two percent into this account, based on your participation in the 457 deferred compensation program. The optional 457 plan allows employees to contribute to a pre-tax retirement account through payroll deduction.
Term life insurance
Each employee is covered by a term life insurance policy in the amount their annual salary.
Short-term disability coverage
Employees who are off work because of illness or non-work related injuries may be eligible to receive 60 percent of their salary through the city’s short term disability plan.
Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance
Employees may elect additional coverage under the Voya Compass Insurance plans. Accident insurance offers a flat payment based on the treatment of an injury. The critical illness plan offers coverage for diagnosis of cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and many other diseases. Hospital indemnity insurance pays a flat rate for admittance to the hospital.
Pet insurance
Employees may reduce veterinarian costs by insuring their pet through Nationwide pet insurance.
Employee assistance program
Short term, crisis counseling is available at no charge to all employees and immediate family members. St Luke's offers legal and financial services as well.
Employee wellness program
Annual wellness benefits are funded by the city, with some specific benefits due to the nature of firefighting. Participation in the wellness program provides a discount on health insurance premiums.
Educational expense reimbursement program
The city will reimburse employees for tuition and books up to $3,500 annually for department-approved, work-related college courses.
Voluntary payroll deductions
Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA), deferred compensation, local bank savings accounts and United Way deductions can be authorized.
Holidays
Ten paid holidays per year and one personal holiday per year.
Vacation
Leave is accrued at 4.31 hours bi-weekly, for an accumulation of 112.06 hours in the first year. The leave accumulation rate increases based on years of service.
Sick leave
Sick leave is accrued at 5.17 hours bi-weekly.
Recreational discounts
Full-time employees receive 20-percent discounts on all city recreational programs, including summer pool passes.
