Any contractor planning to blast must first acquire a blasting permit from the Lenexa Fire Department. Blasting within the City of Lenexa must be conducted in accordance with the applicable section of the 2018 International Fire Code, Article 3-6-B of the Lenexa City Code, and regulations adopted by the State of Kansas, K.A.R. 22-4-5./N.F.P.A. 495.
In the City of Lenexa blasting companies are required to offer pre-blast surveys to any structure that is within 500 feet of any blast hole and notification within 1000 feet. The survey documents all structural and cosmetic flaws that are present in those structures prior to blasting activities. Consent for the survey is encouraged, but is at the discretion of the property owner.
A blasting permit is valid for the specified thirty-day period. Extensions will be considered on a case by case basis. Extensions will not be approved if delays are avoidable or manageable by the permit holder.
Any person in violation of the above stated policies shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, publishable by Section 1-1-C-3 of the Lenexa City Code, unless otherwise specifically set out.
While the City of Lenexa has designated the Fire Department as the local issuer of blasting permits, blasting is actually regulated by the State of Kansas. Local jurisdictions like Lenexa may enact regulations to make the requirements for blasting more stringent. The City requires a permit so we are aware of who is blasting where, and for what purpose. The permitting process also gives us the ability to make sure those conducting the blasting are properly licensed through the State, that they have the required insurance coverage in place, and we have the contact information for the blaster & blasting company.
Citizens with questions about blasting are encouraged to call the Lenexa Fire Department, Prevention Division at 913.477.7990.
