Open Records Request

An Open Records Request is a general request for public records in our custody. The criteria for public release of these documents are more stringent. Open Records Requests are governed by our policy and the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA).

Making an Open Records Request does not automatically guarantee you access to desired records. The release of information must meet the criteria outlined in KORA. If your request is denied, you will be notified of the reasons why.

Make an Open Records Request

Come in person in the front lobby of the Lenexa Police Department, 12500 W. 87th St. Pkwy., Lenexa, KS 66215. The lobby is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

What is the purpose of the Kansas Open Records Act?

The Kansas Open Records Act allows you to see or access copies of public records. It is the public policy of Kansas that "public records shall be open for inspection by any person unless otherwise provided, and this act shall be liberally construed and applied to promote such policy."

What is the general rule about records being open to the public?

Unless the report is closed, pursuant to specific legal authority, all public records are open for inspection and any person may view them to make abstracts or obtain copies of a public record.

The burden of providing an exemption from disclosure is on the agency not disclosing the information.

Is the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) the same as the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA)?

No. FOIA is federal law that applies to records possessed by agencies and branches of the federal government. FOIA and KORA are different laws that have similar provisions but are not exactly the same. We are governed by KORA guidelines.
