The Lenexa Rec Center offers an exciting and active work experience in Lenexa. This 100,000-square-foot community facility features cutting-edge fitness equipment, a fun-filled indoor pool, a jogging/walking track that encompasses a full-service fitness floor and two gyms for open play. 

Recreation programming includes karate, summer camp, youth sports and art. Other services include birthday parties and rentals.

The Rec Center receives around 685 visits per day, including member and nonmember patrons.

Activities Attendant

This position is primarily responsible for the coordination, preparation and supervision of birthday parties and events, as well as monitoring and maintaining the gymnasium space during open gym, activities and other assigned events.

Team members must be at least 16 years of age. 

Child Watch Attendant 

Child Watch Attendants are responsible for providing short-term supervision and enrichment of the children of families that are using the Kid Zone while maintaining a clean and safe area.  

Responsibilities include child check-in/check-out, implementing activities (sports, arts and crafts, games), enforcing rules and policies, and maintaining visual and auditory supervision at all times.

Team members must be at least 16 years of age and available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.  

Front Desk Attendant

Front Desk Attendants serve as the first line of contact with our members and guests. Responsibilities include member check in, sales of memberships and passes, program registrations, cash reconciliation, enforcing Rec Center policies and procedures and resolving customer concerns or complaints.

Team members must be able to work a minimum of 3 shifts a week and be at least 16 years of age. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. 

Summer Camp Counselor

Camp Counselors are responsible for helping develop, implement and facilitate all of the fun that takes place during summer camp. Camp Counselors will help initiate and lead various daily activities while actively engaged with the campers. 

Camp Counselors will have the ability to communicate and work with a variety of ages and skill levels. Camp Counselors must have the desire and ability to work in a cooperative, fun, team-oriented atmosphere with kids. 

About Lenexa Summer Camp: Campers participate in a variety of activities each day. Most camp activities have been designed to fit the theme of each camp day/week and include: icebreakers, arts, sports/active games, outdoors, fitness, science, and chill time. Other items include weekly field trips and swimming two to three times per week. Each group will plan different activities for their campers’ age to optimize their camp experience. 

There are part-time and full-time opportunities within camp. No nights, no weekends. All counselors must be at least 16 years old. 

Head Camp Counselor 

Head Camp Counselors are responsible for leading their group of counselors in the creative development, implementation and fun within their specific group of campers. Head Camp Counselors will help initiate, lead and oversee daily activities, as well as discipline and supervision of both campers and counselors within their group. 

Head Camp Counselors will have the ability to communicate and work with a variety of ages and skill levels, while maintaining a lead role within their group and camp. Head Camp Counselors must have the desire and ability to work in a cooperative, fun, team-oriented atmosphere with kids. 

About Lenexa Summer Camp: Campers participate in a variety of activities each day. Most camp activities have been designed to fit the theme of each camp day/week and include: icebreakers, arts, sports/active games, outdoors, fitness, science, and chill time. Other items include weekly field trips and swimming two to three times per week. Each group will plan different activities for their campers’ age to optimize their camp experience. 

Head Counselors work full-time hours during the summer months. No nights, no weekends. All Head Counselors are required to be at least 18 years old and have at least six months of job-related experience. 

Fitness Attendant

Fitness is so important for the health and wellness of all ages. The Fitness Attendant gets to be a part of that journey for Rec Center members and is responsible for customer service, cleaning equipment and equipment orientations for all cardio and nautilus equipment offered on the fitness floor.

All staff are required to be at least 16 years old. You need to have a general knowledge of fitness equipment, personal exercise experience and the ability to lift 50 pounds.

Group Fitness Instructor

Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for instruction of a safe and effective exercise class, with options for all fitness levels. In addition, proper cleanup and attendance tracking is required. If you are looking to teach a specific format, we recommend having specialty certifications such as spin or yoga.  

All staff are required to be at least 18 years old. We recommend having a nationally recognized certification such as ACE, NSAM, AFFA. 

Personal Trainer

Personal trainers are responsible for creating an individualized programs designed to meet the needs of each client. As a personal trainer, you will perform wellness assessments as well as recruit and retain a client portfolio. 

All staff are required to be at least 18 years old. We require trainers to have a nationally recognized certification.

What is the dress code?

Each position has a dress code, and the policy is explained during the hiring process. If Rec Center-branded shirts are required, one will be provided at no charge.

How are work schedules created?

Each supervisor creates schedules differently for the positions they oversee. Make sure to ask how schedules are created during your interview. 

Do staff have to be CPR/first aid certified?

Yes. However, the Rec Center will assist you in completing the certification within your first 30 days of hire.

How often do staff get paid?

Team members receive pay every two weeks on a Friday. Paychecks are automatically deposited into a checking or savings account.

What kind of staff orientation and training do you provide?

It is vital to the success of team members within their position to train properly. Each supervisor has their own process and timeline for orientation and training. Make sure to ask this question during your interview.

How old are summer campers and what is the camp size?

It depends on the year. However, camp size is typically between 70–100 campers per week. All campers must have completed kindergarten and can be as old as age 13.

Are summer campers broken into small groups by age?

Yes. Each group varies in size depending on the overall camp enrollment. A typical group is between 10–20 campers.
