As we wind down the Lenexa Farmers Market regular season, we wanted to highlight a staff member who is moving into a new season of life. Connie Berggren has been a member of our Market team since the first season in 2018. She has always been there to greet you and help find what you are looking for. Connie will be leaving us to spend time with her husband and plan some traveling. We will miss her warm and happy smile, but we know she will be a lifetime customer.

Connie shared some of what she loves about the Market below.

Why did you want to be part of the Lenexa Farmers Market?

I have lived in Lenexa for many years and loved volunteering in the community. Farmers markets are my happy place. I grew up in a rural community and have always liked supporting farmers and local businesses. Working for the Market was a perfect fit!

What has been most rewarding about the Market?

I love it when new people find the Market! It has been fun to see how many new farmers and vendors want to be part of the Lenexa Farmers Market family.

What’s a favorite question you get asked by customers?

How long will the Market be open this year?

What have you learned from working with Market vendors?

How hardworking and creative they are! I admire anyone who wants to farm or own their own business; it’s a hard job. They wouldn’t do it if they didn’t love it.

What's something you'd recommend people try at the Market?

Roasted okra! I had only ever had it in stews or gumbo. Try roasting it with a little olive oil and salt. It’s crunchy and delicious!

What really makes your day at the Market?

Seeing kids running up to their favorite booth to get fresh-baked items, or just-picked fruits and veggies. It makes my day when they ask for veggies by name!

What do you do when you're not at the Lenexa Farmers Market?

I teach English to non-native adults at Johnson County Community College. I enjoy taking walks, reading, cooking, and sharing a meal with family and friends.

Do you have a special talent or hobby?

I love eating foods from other countries, then trying to recreate those recipes at home.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I used to be shy — just kidding! I’m kind of an open book. No surprises.

What's your favorite food?

I couldn’t possibly pick just one. I do love eating seasonal produce, though. Working at the Market has given me an appreciation for fresh-picked strawberries and tomatoes. I never eat them in winter now.
