The 2020 general election is approaching soon. Make sure you're aware of key deadlines and your voting options. 

2020 Johnson County election calendar

Oct. 13: Last day to register to vote in the general election. You can register to vote at any city hall, the Johnson County Election Office, by mail, by fax or online (with a valid Kansas driver'slicense or nondriver's identification card).

Oct. 14: Advance voting by mail begins.You can return your ballot by mail or hand-deliver it to the election office or a polling location. There is a drop box available at the front entrance of the Johnson County Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Rd., Olathe. See more advance voting rules here.

Oct. 19: Advance voting in person begins. There are seven advance voting in person locations in Johnson County this year, and evening and Saturday hours are provided at each location. 

Oct. 27: Advance ballot application deadline. Learn how to apply for an advance ballot here.

Nov. 3: General election polls open 6 am. to 7 p.m. Find your polling place and view your sample ballot here.

Political signs

Make sure you're aware of the rules for placing political signs. There are different rules for placing signs on your private property or in the right of way.

Remember, political signs are never allowed in these spots: 

  • In public parks, outside public facilities or on other public property. 
  • On utility poles, trees, streetlights, bridges, benches or other public structures.
  • In areas where they interfere with intersection sight distances.
  • In any part of a highway interchange. 
  • Between the back of the curb and a sidewalk or trail, when a sidewalk or trail is located in the right of way.
