Meet the vendor: Ronnie D’s Cheesecakes

Meet the vendor: Ronnie D’s Cheesecakes

cheesecakeRonald DiGiovanni, owner of Ronnie D’s Cheesecakes, spent most of his adult life working in the beverage industry. Growing up, Ronnie’s father owned a chain of local liquor stores. At the height of his business, his dad had seven stores throughout the area where Ronnie worked until 1986. Ronnie then moved into the wholesale side of the beverage industry, calling on many restaurants.

Eight years ago, Ronnie left the beverage industry and slowly started to focus on his love of baking cheesecake. And here's the story of how the hobby grew into something more.

Ronnie’s wife wanted to be at the beach to celebrate her 60th birthday. They already had friends in Naples, Florida, to visit. But before they left on the trip, Ronnie’s wife decided to have a garage sale to make a little extra spending money. She suggested that Ronnie bake his cheesecake to sell at the garage sale. Ronnie said the next thing he knew, she had car magnets, business cards and was selling cheesecakes to JJ’s on the Plaza. Ronnie’s wife was soon taking orders from co-workers, and many friends were ordering cheesecakes from Ronnie.

Ronnie uses his mother’s original recipe with only eight ingredients — one being vanilla extract that he makes himself. Ronnie D’s cheesecakes come in 9” that feed 10 to 12 people and 4 ½” mini cheesecake. The cheesecake is creamy and smooth with a thin cracker crust. Original flavor is always available, but sometimes Ronnie mixes it up and makes lemon, lime, key lime, strawberry, cherry, pumpkin and amaretto. Ronnie makes everything from scratch here locally in Lenexa.

You can find Ronnie and his delectable cheesecakes on occasional Saturdays at the Lenexa Farmers Market.
