Battery safety during Fire Prevention Week

For Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 5–11, 2025), let's "Charge into Fire Safety." Lithium-ion batteries charge everything from smartphones to electric cars. As these rechargeable batteries become more integrated into our lives, it is important to review safe usage and disposal.

Charging

  • Always use the chargers and cords that come with the product.
  • Charge your device on a hard surface.
  • Unplug or remove the battery once it is fully charged.

Safety concerns

  • Stop using the device right away if it becomes hot to the touch, smells odd, makes noises or changes color or shape.
  • If it is safe to do so, move the item away from anything flammable.
  • Call 911 if you believe there is a risk of fire.

Disposal

Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in the trash — they can start a fire. Instead, take batteries to a proper recycling facility. There are several recycling options in the area, including a drop-off appointment at the Johnson County Household Hazardous Waste facility.
