Exterior Grant Program

The City of Lenexa's Exterior Grant Program encourages owners of older residential properties with lower home values to invest in exterior improvements. It prioritizes projects that enhance neighborhoods, especially improvements that face the street or are publicly visible. The program strengthens existing neighborhoods and assists homeowners who may not be able to make needed repairs.

Qualifying properties and improvements

The Exterior Grant Program is available to homes anywhere in Lenexa, both owner- and renter-occupied. To be considered for the 2024 program, a home needed be county-appraised at or below $323,500 and be built in or before 1977. This represents homes as old or older than the citywide 25th percentile for single-family homes and valued at less than or equal to the previous year’s citywide 25th percentile for single-family residential property value.

Homeowners must invest at least $2,500 and are eligible for a 50% reimbursement up to $5,000 every 10 years.

Eligible exterior improvements include repair, replacement or addition of the following:

  • Siding, paint, masonry, windows, doors, gutters, roofs
  • Driveways and sidewalks
  • Landscaping
  • Tree replacement in conjunction with the removal of a dead or dying tree (tree must be dead or dying as determined by a certified arborist)
  • Replacement decks, patios, porches
  • Retaining walls and replacement fences
  • Detached garages or other accessory structures (where allowed)
  • Solar panels (where allowed)
  • Exterior lighting
  • Removal or repair of existing pools
