As the Kansas City region prepares to welcome visitors from around the world for the FIFA World Cup 26™, Lenexa is partnering with Johnson County and the City of Overland Park on a new pilot express bus line that will connect Kansas City International Airport (KCI) to two major activity hubs in Johnson County.

For nearly a year, the three organizations have been working together to bring this limited-time transit option to life. The goal is twofold: support convenient travel during the World Cup and test long-term demand for a direct airport connection to Johnson County.

The pilot service is supported by a federal grant awarded to Johnson County through the Mid-America Regional Council. Lenexa, Overland Park and the County will each contribute $200,000 to match the grant funding. Lenexa’s portion will come from the Transient Guest Tax and can be covered without affecting the City’s reserve levels.

What to expect

This will be a “drop-and-ride” service instead of a traditional park and ride.

The Johnson County United Airport Drop and Ride bus line is planned to begin operating in spring 2026 and continue through November 2026, with the possibility of a short extension depending on how far the grant funding stretches. The service will be free during the pilot period.

The route will stop in Lenexa City Center and the Overland Park Convention Center. Buses are planned to run from early morning through the evening and arrive about every 25 minutes, making it easier for visitors and residents to connect to hotels, events and activities throughout the area.

More information coming soon

Specific operating details — including final schedules, route information and rider instructions — will be shared with the public in early 2026 once planning and coordination are complete.

This collaboration supports Lenexa’s Vision 2040 goal of creating inviting places and making strategic community investments that enhance mobility, support tourism and strengthen regional connections.
