When parents drop their kids off at Kid Zone inside the Rec Center, they’re trusting that their children will be cared for in a safe, positive and nurturing environment. For Tina, that’s at the heart of everything she does.

“We are working as a team to ensure safety for the children when parents drop off,” Tina said. “That’s kind of our primary goal — making sure that they’re safe. That’s why the parents are dropping off. They want to know that they can go do what they need to do, and their kids are in a safe environment that’s also fun, friendly and positive.”

Tina has been part of the Rec Center family for two years, and her passion for helping kids grow, explore and have fun shines through every day. Whether it’s encouraging children to try something new or making sure every family feels comfortable, Tina approaches her work with heart.

“We want the kids to be able to do what they want to do, but also maybe try some new things,” she says. “We want them to come back, so we make sure that each of us is providing for them what they need — but also having fun.”

At the end of every shift, Tina and her teammates make sure the space is spotless and ready for the next day.

“We work really well as a team to do our cleaning duties so that we can keep the kids healthy as well,” she explains. “Not a lot of places really push that, so that’s a big reason I love it here. You guys make sure that it’s not only a fun and safe environment, but also a clean facility.”

Being both a mom and a staff member gives Tina a special perspective on her role.

“Now that I’m a mom, I pay attention to the parents that are nervous about dropping off or have kids with separation anxiety,” she says. “I know how important that is to me as a mom, so I try to make those families feel comfortable and supported.”

Tina lives in Lawrence with her husband Adam and their daughter, Holly, who is homeschooled. Balancing motherhood and her passion for childcare has been a fulfilling journey.

“I always knew I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and homeschool, but I also missed my role as a director and lead teacher, Tina said. "Working here lets me do what I love while still being a mom and homeschooling. I feel like I’m living my dream in this moment.”

Even on the busiest days, Tina’s team spirit and positive attitude shine. “Even if we’re short-staffed, everybody just works so well together to make it work,” she says.

For Tina, the drive to the Rec Center — no matter how long — is worth it. “It makes it worth it to come here. Even if it’s a long drive, it’s worth it for those reasons.”

Tina’s warmth, teamwork, and dedication make her an invaluable part of the Rec Center family — and a shining example of the care and connection that make our programs special.
