Vote on City Council seats in each ward this fall

This fall’s general election — set for Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025 — will give voters the opportunity to choose leaders for city government, school boards and other public offices. One seat in each of Lenexa’s City Council wards is up for election this year. The candidates are: 

Ward 1: John Michael Handley (incumbent), Joe Shull

Ward 2: Bill Nicks (incumbent), Nicole Wasson 

Ward 3: Avery Bell, Corey Hunt 

Ward 4: Craig K. Denny (incumbent)

Key election dates

Oct. 14: Deadline to register to vote in the general election. There are several ways you can submit your application, outlined at JoCoElection.org/Registration

Oct. 25: In-person advance voting begins.

  • Advance voting locations are open Saturdays (Oct. 25 and Nov. 1) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekdays (Oct. 27–31) from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Limited advance voting locations will be open Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • Find a list of locations at JoCoElection.org.   

Oct. 28: Last day to apply for a mail ballot. Apply at Voter.JoCoElection.org

Nov. 4: Election Day. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find your polling place and a sample ballot at MyVoteInfo.VoteKS.org.

Election sign rules

Here are Lenexa’s temporary sign rules during an election period — which is 45 days before and two days after a primary, general or special election. 

  • Signs are allowed in the right of way but must be set back 6 feet from the back of the curb. They cannot be placed between the back of the curb and a sidewalk or trail.

  • Signs must be removed from the right of way outside of the election period.

  • Signs may not be placed in public parks or on other public property.

  • Signs may not exceed 6 square feet in area or 4 feet in height.

  • Signs may not exceed 5 pounds in weight, including both the sign and its mounting system.

  • Signs may not be placed where they could obstruct drivers’ views.

  • Signs must be placed with the property owner’s consent.

  • Signs can remain in a yard for up to 90 days, as long as they are out of the right of way.
