Water safety tips for all ages
Published on June 20, 2025
Summer in Lenexa means plenty of opportunities to cool off — whether it’s at the neighborhood pool, local lakes or backyard splash pads. While water activities are a great way to beat the heat, they also come with real risks. A few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.
Supervision is key. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Whether at a pool, lake or even a small kiddie pool, active adult supervision is the number one way to prevent water-related tragedies. Don’t rely on lifeguards or flotation devices alone — stay within arm’s reach of young swimmers, and keep your attention focused on the water.
Teach water safety early. Swim lessons are one of the best investments you can make for your child’s safety. Kids (and adults) should learn basic swimming skills and understand water rules — like not running near the pool, avoiding drains, and never swimming alone. Lenexa Parks & Recreation offers swim lessons throughout the year.
Use life jackets when needed. Life jackets are essential for boating and recommended for young or inexperienced swimmers around open water. Choose U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and ensure they fit properly.
Be aware of natural water hazards. Local lakes and ponds can have sudden drop-offs, strong currents or hidden debris. Always check the area before swimming, and never dive into unfamiliar water. If boating, follow all safety regulations, and keep an eye on weather conditions.
Establish pool rules. If you have a backyard pool, set clear rules — no diving, no swimming alone and always close gates or covers when not in use. Install a fence with a self-latching gate for added protection, and follow the City’s building codes for pools.
Learn CPR. In a water emergency, knowing CPR can save a life. Consider taking a class or refreshing your skills this summer — it’s a powerful tool that could make all the difference.
Water safety is everyone’s responsibility. With a little preparation and awareness, we can all enjoy a fun, refreshing and safe summer by the water.
