A location tool for emergencies and everyday meetups
Published on April 03, 2026
Trying to meet up with friends at a packed stadium or large park is a challenge. It’s even harder in an emergency if you’re somewhere without a street address — like when hiking, camping or boating. How would you tell first responders exactly where you are?
That’s where what3words can help.
This free app for Apple and Android devices divides the world into 10-foot-by-10-foot squares and assigns each square a unique three-word address. Instead of sharing long GPS coordinates, you can share a simple three-word location that pinpoints your exact spot. It’s more precise than using Google Maps. Plus, it can also work without a data connection, which is helpful at crowded events or in rural areas where cell service may be limited.
If you need emergency help, call 911 first. Then open the what3words app and tap the compass arrow icon to see your three-word address. Tell the dispatcher the three words to help responders locate you faster. The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center uses what3words to assist callers, though not all agencies may use the system.
Of course, technology is just one part of staying safe. Before heading to an unfamiliar or remote area, always tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return.
