Lenexa Animal Control has recently responded to several reports of raccoons showing signs consistent with canine distemper, a viral disease that commonly affects wildlife such as raccoons, skunks and foxes.

Animals affected by distemper may appear disoriented, lethargic, or unusually tame, and may stumble, circle or be active during daylight hours.

Residents are reminded to avoid feeding wildlife and keep a safe distance from wild animals. Feeding wildlife can increase animal contact and contribute to the spread of disease.

If you see a raccoon that appears sick or behaving abnormally in Lenexa, please do not approach the animal. Instead, contact the Lenexa Police Department’s dispatch center at 913.477.7301 so an animal control officer can investigate.

Pet owners should also ensure their dog and cat vaccinations, including distemper, are current.
