When we “spring forward” to begin daylight saving time on March 8, 2026, it’s more than just adjusting the clock. It’s the perfect built-in reminder to do a quick, meaningful safety check around your home. A few simple steps now can make a big difference in an emergency.

Test your smoke alarms

Smoke alarms should be tested once a month.

  • Press the test button. Does the alarm sound loud and clear?
  • Replace batteries if your model doesn’t have 10-year sealed batteries.
  • If your alarm is 10 years old or older, replace the entire unit.

Check carbon monoxide (CO) alarms

CO is colorless, odorless and deadly; working alarms are critical.

  • Test the alarm and replace batteries, if needed.
  • Confirm you have alarms on every level of your home, especially near bedrooms.
  • Replace CO alarms as recommended by the manufacturer — most say five to seven years.

Check fire extinguishers

Make sure you can rely on your extinguisher when it counts.

  • Check that the needle on the pressure gauge is in the green — this means the extinguisher is ready to use.
  • Ensure it’s easy to access.
  • Replace damaged, rusted or expired units.

Review your home escape plan

If a fire occurs, everyone at home needs to know what to do.

  • Identify two ways out of each room.
  • Choose a meeting place outside.
  • Practice your plan, even if it’s just a quick walkthrough.
