Project purpose

The asphalt roundabouts along Clare Road have experienced premature deterioration, resulting in ongoing maintenance needs. Traditional mill-and-overlay maintenance strategies are ineffective, requiring maintenance work every five years to prevent deterioration of the asphalt base. Reconstructing the roundabout with concrete would reduce issues with maintenance to only every 15 to 20 years.

Project description

The Clare Road Infrastructure Improvements Project will reconstruct the pavement portion of the four roundabouts on Clare Road between 83rd Street and Prairie Star Parkway. This project will remove the asphalt pavement, prepare the subgrade, and install concrete pavement at the roundabout and on each approach. Additionally, the sidewalk on the east side of the road will be replaced with a 10-foot-wide trail from Prairie Star Parkway to the Wild Bill Hickok Park, deteriorating curb, sidewalk on the west side, and brick pavers will be removed and replaced as needed.

What to expect during construction

Construction along Clare Road will occur in phases rather than all at once. Because this project includes roundabout reconstruction, trail construction, grading, drainage improvements and pavement work, the exact order of work may vary depending on contractor operations and field conditions. But the contractor must follow City requirements intended to reduce disruption.

• No more than two roundabouts will be under construction at the same time.
• When road or roundabout closures are in place, the contractor will also complete as much nearby trail, grading and related work as practical during that same closure period.
• Access to homes will be maintained throughout construction.
• Traffic control will be coordinated to minimize disruption as much as possible.

Traffic impacts

Clare Road, north of 91st Street to 83rd Street, will close at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, for roundabout reconstruction. All side roads connected to Clare Road within the project area will also be closed. The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately three months, weather permitting.

Note: The five houses on the east side of Clare Road will still have access.

Project updates

Aug. 20, 2026: The traffic switch from Phase 1 to Phase 2 is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 25. By that time, all Phase 1 work south of the Clare Road and 91st Street roundabout will be complete, except for final grading, sod and seeding. Clare Road south of 91st Street will reopen to traffic, while Clare Road north of 91st Street to 83rd Street will be closed to through traffic. Aug. 6, 2026: Phase 1 remains on track for completion by the end of August. At the 91st Terrace/92nd Street roundabout, stamped concrete and grading are complete. At the 91st Street roundabout, roadway pavement is complete, with curb and gutter, sidewalk and trail work scheduled over the next two weeks. Trail construction — not directly related to the roundabout — between Prairie Star Parkway and 89th Street is substantially complete for Phase 1. Final landscaping, signing and pavement markings for this phase will be completed across the corridor near the end of Phase 1. Following completion, traffic control will shift and Clare Road will be closed from north of 91st Street to north of 86th Terrace.

July 16, 2026: At the 91st Terrace/92nd Street roundabout, driving lanes, curb and gutter, and most sidewalk and trail work are complete, with remaining work including stamped concrete within the islands, a small section of sidewalk and trail, and final grading. At the 91st Street roundabout, the existing asphalt has been removed and underdrain installation is underway, with base rock and southbound lane construction scheduled for next week. Trail construction between Prairie Star Parkway and 89th Street is ongoing, with the majority of the trail complete from Prairie Star Parkway to 91st Street and work continuing north as paving operations allow.

June 23, 2026: Asphalt paving on Clare Road south of Prairie Star Parkway is complete, with only minor pavement marking and seeding work remaining. At the 91st Terrace/92nd Street roundabout, the southbound lane has been placed and the northbound lane and east and west legs are scheduled for placement later this week or next week. Work at the 91st Street roundabout remains limited until the main lanes at 91st Terrace/92nd Street are completed. Trail construction between Prairie Star Parkway and 91st Street is ongoing and will continue as major roadway paving operations allow.

June 9, 2026: Asphalt paving south of Prairie Star Parkway is scheduled to begin June 15. Roundabout work at 91st Terrace/92nd Street continues with base rock this week and concrete placement next week. Trail reconstruction between Prairie Star Parkway and 91st Street is underway, with new trail placement starting near Prairie Star Parkway and moving north. Sidewalks within the work zone remain closed; please use caution around construction activities.

May 19, 2026: Construction is scheduled to begin May 26, starting at the roundabouts at Clare Road and 91st Street and Clare Road and 91st Terrace/92nd Street. Initial activities will include removals, underdrain installation, and preparation for new roadway improvements.

April 29, 2026: Realm Construction has indicated they plan to start construction in late May or early June. Once a confirmed start date is established, we will provide additional information on initial construction plans and traffic impacts.
