E-wheel Safety & Rules

Want to travel around Lenexa on an electric-assisted device like an e-bike, e-scooter or motorized skateboard? Here’s what you need to know about where and how to ride legally according to the Standard Traffic Ordinance(PDF, 5MB), and simple ways to help keep everyone safe.

Roll safe

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Use lights if riding at dusk or after dark.
  • Assume others may not see you.
  • Stay alert — avoid headphones or earbuds.
  • Never ride under the influence.
  • Be courteous and follow trail etiquette.
  • Park responsibly. Don’t block sidewalks, trails, building entrances or pedestrian travel.

A Note to Parents & Guardians: Electric-assist bikes, scooters and skateboards are fun — but they also come with responsibility. Talk with your child about wearing helmets, watching speed, yielding to pedestrians and riding courteously. Many e-rideables have ways to limit the max speed — use these features. And, before you purchase an e-rideable, know what is legal and age appropriate.
