The City of Lenexa's internship program offers valuable opportunities for students and young professionals to gain hands-on experience in public service. With mentorship from experienced city staff, interns have the chance to build their networks and make meaningful contributions to their communities while gaining insights into future career paths in government and public administration.

All 2026 internship applications are now open. Most applications close on Feb. 6, 2026. See details for each opportunity below. 

Internship opportunities 

Finance Intern

Gain hands-on experience in municipal budgeting, accounting and financial reporting, while supporting key projects within Lenexa's finance department.

Firefighter Intern

Launch your firefighting career with the Lenexa Fire Department! Train alongside an accredited and highly rated team, gain hands-on firefighting experience, and become part of a community that values service, integrity, and work-life balance.

Parks & Recreation Intern

Engage in meaningful, on-the-job learning in event coordination, recreation programming, and community engagement while working on exciting projects like the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle and summer camps.

Planning Intern

Work alongside city planners on land use, development review and long-range planning projects to learn how Lenexa grows and shapes its community.

Police Intern

Kickstart your law enforcement career with the Lenexa Police Department Internship Program! Gain real-world training, participate in ride-a-longs, and develop skills alongside proactive professionals dedicated to preparing you for a future in policing. 

Public Works Intern (not offered in 2026)

Gain hands-on experience in civil engineering, environmental science, and construction! Work on impactful projects in pavement, stormwater, and traffic infrastructure while contributing to a dynamic municipal team.

This internship is not available for the 2026 cycle, but we expect to offer it again in future years.

Stormwater Intern

Gain hands-on experience in stormwater management, green infrastructure, and GIS while contributing to projects that protect and enhance the local environment.
