Fire safety during travel
Published on July 01, 2025
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of exploring new places when traveling, but it’s crucial not to overlook fire safety. Fires can happen unexpectedly — whether you're in a hotel, camping or traveling by car. Here are some key fire safety tips to help you stay safe while on the go.
Check hotel or vacation rental safety features
Before settling in, take a moment to check the fire exits, emergency evacuation routes and the location of fire extinguishers. Familiarize yourself with any alarm systems. If the smoke alarms have a test button, push it to make sure it sounds.
Be cautious with cooking appliances
When cooking while traveling, whether in a vacation rental or an RV, use cooking appliances cautiously. Never leave cooking food unattended, and keep combustibles like paper towels or dishcloths away from the stovetop. Always turn off stoves and ovens when not in use.
Follow campfire safety guidelines
If you’re camping or enjoying outdoor activities, always follow fire safety rules for campfires. Keep fires small and manageable, never leave them unattended and fully extinguish them when you're done. Use fire rings or designated fire pits and keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to quickly put out any flare-ups.
Have an emergency plan
No matter where you’re staying, always have a fire emergency plan in place. Know where the nearest exits are, identify a meeting spot outside the building and have a way to communicate with others in case you’re separated.
Keep fire extinguishers nearby
Whether you're staying in a rental, an RV, or even your own car, having a small fire extinguisher can be a lifesaver. Make sure it's accessible and that everyone in your group knows how to use it.
By staying aware of potential fire hazards and following these safety tips, you can enjoy your travels without the worry of a fire-related emergency. Prioritize safety, plan ahead and always be prepared to act quickly if needed.
