Check hotel or vacation rental safety features

Before settling in, take a moment to check the fire exits, emergency evacuation routes and the location of fire extinguishers. Familiarize yourself with any alarm systems. If the smoke alarms have a test button, push it to make sure it sounds.

Be cautious with cooking appliances
