Rec Center Spotlight: Barbara McCarthy

In 1963, Lenexa Rec Center member Barbara McCarthy graduated from high school at a time when there was a nationwide shortage of teachers.
“I loved teaching,” she said. “Teachers are kind of born with that feeling and desire to help others.”
Barbara went on to spend 44 years in education, building a career and a legacy rooted in service and connection.
“Seeing [students] for who they are and taking them from where they are and helping them gain more — that's the big secret to teaching.”
A lifelong learner and dedicated crafter, Barbara eventually retired from the Olathe School District. But her passion for building, creating and learning never slowed down.
“I grew up with a dad and learned how to do electric and plumbing work,” she said. “My father actually helped me build my first house and it was off 95th Street and Woodland Road (formerly rural route two) in Lenexa. It was five acres on a soybean field. That’s where I raised my kids.”
Barbara continues to put her hands to work, especially during the colder months.
“In the wintertime, I do the 80-year-old woman thing — I sew, I knit, and I do quilt,” she said. “Those are my indoor things. I'm the seamstress of the family. I've even made renaissance costumes for my grandson.”
Her commitment to staying active and healthy is just as strong as her love for crafting.
“My day isn’t complete until I’ve done my routine here,” she said. “My back needs it, my hips need it, I need it. I get my 10,000 steps in every single day. My sister always says, ‘You know, you’re going to wear out those artificial hips.’”
When asked about her favorite part of the Rec Center, she didn’t hesitate.
“The beautiful track upstairs,” she said. “Floor-to-ceiling windows, nice and gentle hills and views to die for. It’s great with the heat in the summer and ice in the winter.”
Barbara takes her fitness seriously — and for good reason.
“My life centers around getting these things done=,” she said. “I have had three hip replacements, and I have scoliosis back, which has kind of given in over the last few years and I've shrunk five and a quarter inch. Between keeping the ligaments and the muscles strong around that spine and then the old adage, if you don't use it, you lose it.”
Eight years ago, Barbara moved back to Lenexa from Florida to be closer to her family — three adult children and four grandchildren. When she’s not at the Rec Center or tending to her yard, she’s diving into genealogy research and planning trips to visit the places her ancestors once called home. She’s been to every U.S. state except Alaska.
