Orchestra members and conductor stand on stage before audience

The Lenexa Community Orchestra is hitting a high note this summer as it celebrates its 10th season of bringing free live music to the community.

What began in 2017 as a vision to create a welcoming, volunteer-based orchestra has grown into a beloved summer tradition — one that connects musicians and audiences from across the region.

This milestone season includes a special addition: each concert will feature an original piece composed by a member of the orchestra.

It’s a fitting way to celebrate not just the group’s longevity, but the depth of talent within it.

The second concert, July 18, will be a nod to our country’s 250th anniversary of our founding. Lenexa Mayor Julie Sayers is scheduled to lead the orchestra in its performance of “Stars and Stripes Forever” and Council Member Bill Nicks will narrate “The Lincoln Portrait.”

Under the direction of Richard Ryan, the orchestra continues to offer a unique experience for both musicians and audiences. Volunteer players of varying skill levels come together for a short, focused rehearsal schedule, culminating in three one-hour performances.

The concerts are free, family-friendly and designed to be approachable — whether you’re a lifelong music lover or simply looking for an easy night out with friends and neighbors.

As the orchestra enters its second decade, its mission remains the same: bring people together, make music accessible and create something meaningful — one performance at a time.

Concert dates:

Concerts start at 7 p.m. and take place at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, 12701 W. 67th St., Shawnee, KS, 66216.
