The City of Lenexa is moving forward with plans to build a new 27,000-square-foot Fire Station 6 Headquarters on City-owned property at 87th Street Parkway and Monrovia Street.

In June, the City Council approved the project’s preliminary plan, including conceptual designs by Finkle + Williams Architecture for the new headquarters. The proposed facility includes three apparatus bays, living quarters for firefighters, offices for Fire Department command staff, training and fire prevention divisions, and permanent space for the City’s Information Technology Department.

The site, located near Interstate 35, formerly housed Lenexa’s City Hall, Police Department and Municipal Court, all of which have since relocated to new facilities.

Providing fast emergency response is essential for protecting lives and property. In 2020, the Fire Department began temporarily stationing firefighters and apparatus at the former municipal complex to evaluate response times. In 2023, the City installed a temporary structure on the site to house fire apparatus year-round. The results confirmed the location’s strategic value for serving northeast Lenexa.

A permanent Fire Station 6 Headquarters will help the Fire Department meet or exceed the National Fire Protection Association’s four-minute median travel time standard for first responders. The new facility will also strengthen emergency preparedness and improve operational efficiency across the department.

Key benefits of the project include:

  • Faster emergency response times and improved health outcomes in northeast Lenexa.
  • A centralized headquarters for Fire Department administrative staff, replacing multiple office locations.
  • Permanent space for the City’s Information Technology Department and critical technology infrastructure.
  • Enhanced training space for emergency management coordination.
  • Better distribution of fire and Emergency Medical Services resources, providing relief to two of the City’s busiest fire stations.
  • Preservation of the existing cell tower, which supports critical local and regional public safety radio communications.
  • Maintaining a strong public safety presence in an area where residents have expressed a desire for continued emergency services.

Lenexa has issued $25.3 million in general obligation bonds to help fund construction. General obligation bonds allow the City to spread the cost of major capital projects over time rather than paying the full cost upfront. The total project budget is $28 million, and Fire Station 6 Headquarters is included in the City’s 2026–2030 Capital Improvement Program.

Demolition and construction are expected to begin in November 2026, with completion anticipated in 2028.
