Fall is apple season, and each variety shines in its own way. Here are some of the types you’ll find right now at the Lenexa Farmers Market and how to enjoy them. The apples are locally grown by South Baldwin Farms and carried by JET Produce and Meats.

  • Blondee – Crisp, juicy and mildly sweet with a hint of tartness. Great for snacking, salads, lunchboxes and baking.
  • Gala – Sweet and mild, perfect for snacking or tossing into salads. Also a tasty addition to oatmeal, yogurt or slaws.
  • Honey Crisp – Exceptionally crisp, juicy and sweet-tart. A standout for snacking, salads and cheese boards, and holds its crunch well when sliced.
  • Jonathan – Tangy and aromatic, ideal for pies, crisps, sauces and cider. Its balanced flavor also makes it delicious for fresh eating.
  • Sweet Maia – Extra sweet and crisp. Best eaten fresh or paired with cheese. Try it sliced into salads or served alongside a savory snack.
  • Zestar! – A zesty early-season apple with brown sugar notes. Delicious for eating fresh or cooking into sauce. Also great in pies, crisps and baked dishes.

Tip: Mix sweet and tart apples (like Gala and Jonathan) for the best pies and crisps.
