New brush truck joins fleet

It’s more than just a truck — it’s a testament to innovation, teamwork and taxpayer savings. Meet B93, the Lenexa Fire Department’s new brush truck, designed for quick response and access to areas larger equipment can’t reach. 

From concept to completion, this project was 12 months in the making and was built almost entirely in-house by five City employees.

The department previously relied on a swap loader optional bed system but experienced ongoing operational issues with the diesel exhaust fluid systems. To improve reliability and off-road performance, firefighters designed B93 as a gasoline-powered brush truck specifically equipped for the demanding terrain of grass and brush fires. 

Built on a Ford F-550 Super Duty chassis, B93 features four-wheel drive, increased ground clearance and a compact design that allows crews to access fields, wooded areas and narrow roads traditional fire engines can’t easily reach.

Equipped with a 300-gallon water tank, high-pressure pump and dual 100-foot hose lines, the truck supports rapid response and immediate fire suppression during fast-moving grass fires.

“This project reflects the creativity, skill and dedication of our personnel,” said Lenexa Fire Chief Travis Vaughn. “It’s a practical investment that will serve our firefighters and community well for years to come.”

The best part? B93 was built for approximately $125,000 — less than half the estimated $250,000 cost of purchasing a fully-equipped vendor-built unit — saving taxpayers more than $100,000.
