Firearm Safety at Home

If firearms are present in your home, and children live in or visit your household, secure storage is crucial to prevent tragic accidents. Kids are naturally curious and may find firearms even when adults believe they’re hidden. Every year, preventable shootings occur because a child gained access to an unsecured weapon.

Keep firearms unloaded and locked when not in use, and store ammunition separately. Locking safes or quick-access lockboxes allows for responsible storage that still provides access for home defense.

It’s also important to talk with your children about firearm safety and make sure they know to never touch a gun and tell an adult immediately if they find one.

The Lenexa Police Department offers free gun locks to residents. Stop by the Lenexa Justice Center anytime 24/7 to pick one up and help keep your home safe for everyone.
