Improvements to the Community Center and Senior Center campus include:

  • Consolidation of buildings
  • Accessibility improvements
  • Expansion of senior program areas
  • Outdoor pickleball courts and gathering spaces
  • Restroom and locker room updates
  • Replacement of aging building façade
  • Public art investment

Upon completion, the renovated facility will be called the Lenexa Old Town Activity Center.

May 16, 2023

The Project Team provided an update at the May 16, 2023 City Council meeting on current ideas coming from the schematic design process. While these plans are not final until they receive approval from the City Council later this year, the project is beginning to take shape.

The Community Center will be transformed through renovations and the addition of more than 3,500-square-feet of programmable space. New metal panels will be installed in colors and textures reflecting the character of Old Town and will create a more welcoming, modern center.

Programs for seniors will move to the east end of the building and the current Senior Center and adjacent parking will be razed. This area will be converted into a dynamic outdoor recreation space that will serve as a gathering place for the community. Plans include four pickleball courts, shuffleboard courts and an open turf area which can host a variety of programs surrounded by a seat wall. A turf play area will be next to outdoor seating covered by a new awning which provides shade. A large mural will wrap around two sides of the building and landscaping will complement the space.

These plans will be considered by the Planning Commission at the June 26 meeting, where further public comment is welcomed.
The Project Team hopes to begin construction in November. The site will be under construction for about a year and the public will be able to use much of the facility as it undergoes this transformation.
