Project description

Ad Astra Pool opened to the public in 1988 and has served the community for nearly 40 years. Due to the condition of the pool and ongoing maintenance challenges, it needs a complete rebuild.

The City Council approved $8 million for reconstruction of the pool. The design team will seek community input to ensure the new pool has the right mix of amenities and programming for those it serves. Based on funding, leaders are hopeful it will compare in size and features to Flat Rock Creek Pool and complement Lenexa's overall aquatics offerings.

Public engagement

Lenexa Parks & Recreation and SFS Architecture have hosted two community open houses thus far, June 13 and July 24. The first was to gather input on amenities, design elements and programming. The second was for residents to give feedback on four concepts created from the ideas shared in June. Both open houses also included an online survey for those unable to attend.

A third and final open house is scheduled for Sept. 11 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Lenexa City Hall. Here residents will have the opportunity to view preliminary designs and communicate any reservations, likes or dislikes.

Project updates

May 2024: Ad Astra Advisory Committee, comprised of three community members and two City Council representatives, meet with the design team to discuss the project and public engagement approaches.

June 2024: Lenexa Parks & Recreation and SFS Architecture host first community open house (June 13) for residents to give input on amenities, design elements and programming. Residents also have the option to take an online survey. Nearly 900 people participate.

June–July 2024: SFS Architecture hosts a series of pop-up events at Lenexa's outdoor pools for patron's to give input.

July 2024: Lenexa Parks & Recreation and SFS Architecture host a second community open house (July 24) for residents to give feedback on the four concepts created from community input in June. Approximately 900 people weigh in.
