Artwork must be appropriate for the exhibit. Art must be family friendly (no obscenity, vulgarity or hate messages, etc.). Art for mature audiences will not be accepted. Art also may not be used to advertise products/services or political messaging.
All submissions must be original designs created by the artists submitting them. By submitting your work, you are agreeing that it does not contain any third-party copyrighted materials (including images and wording).
Base material for the peace poles will be provided to all approved artists/groups. The wooden pole is 6 feet in length and 3.5 inches square. Artists must decorate the poles that are provided. Artists must provide their own paints and other supplies used to decorate their poles.
Artists must provide their own transportation to pick up their poles and deliver them to the City after they have been decorated for the exhibit. Artists will also need to have their own workspace for decorating their poles. Peace poles may not be delivered to the City before the turn-in date, unless otherwise approved by the City/program coordinator.
Artists/groups may enter as many pole designs as they wish. The jury will determine which designs will be accepted. If an artist/group is accepted for multiple poles, the artist/group must indicate by March 17, 2027, whether they will commit to decorating poles for all of the approved designs; or, if they choose to decorate fewer poles than accepted, they must indicate which designs they will commit to doing.
Artists are not limited to a particular medium when decorating their poles. However, any items, embellishments or materials used to decorate a pole must be secured for safety and must be weather resistant and durable so that it will withstand typical weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and rain during the six-month display period.
Artists may not transfer their pole to other artists/groups without written permission from the program coordinator.
As part of the application you must submit a sketch and a brief description of the proposed design. The design on your final decorated peace pole must be largely the same as the image submitted with the application. Decorated poles that do not follow the original approved design might not be accepted for the exhibit.
Exhibiting artists will be responsible for any repairs necessary during the exhibit and before the auction to restore poles to the original submission status.
Ownership of the decorated peace poles will remain with the Lenexa Rotary Club. Following the exhibit, the Peace Poles will be sold at auction organized by the Rotary Club to benefit a local charitable cause. You retain the copyright of your design submission and the right to use the design for your personal use. However, you grant the City of Lenexa and Lenexa Rotary Club a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable and non-exclusive license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display submitted artwork or parts thereof for advertising, promotional and other purposes, including resale items and the right to create derivative works of your entries, in whole or in part in any media now existing or subsequently developed. You may or may not be credited when the artwork is used.
You acknowledge that rights of attribution and integrity generally conferred by 17 U.S.C. §106A(a) (the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990, “VARA”), and any other rights of the same nature granted by other federal state or foreign laws and by submitting an entry, you waive your VARA rights for such submission of artwork.
