Solo or Shared Exhibit Call for Artists

The Lenexa City Hall Art Gallery rotates exhibits on nearly a monthly basis. Apply to have your 2D or 3D work considered for a solo or shared non-juried exhibit.

We select art based on artistic and cultural significance that encourages public education and appreciation of the arts. We also look for art that demonstrates professional excellence and creativity, taking into consideration general standards of decency and respect for cultural diversity.

The linear wall space available to hang art in the gallery is approximately 85 to 105 feet. Display cases are also available for showing 3D art.

Applications to show artists’ work are considered by the Lenexa Arts Council.

Step 1.Guidelines

2D and 3D artists are welcome to apply for a solo or joint exhibit. There is no residency requirement or fee for solo and joint exhibits.

The gallery includes three different spaces: west room (main lobby with a single wall for art), east room (smaller room with 4 walls for art) and the upstairs public space outside the city offices (single wall for art).

Most 3D exhibits are displayed in the gallery’s 10 covered cases (five cases are 18x18” wide and five are 23x23” wide; covers are 24”, 28” and 32” high). 3D art that stands alone may also be considered.

Step 2.Prepare your Exhibit Proposal

The Lenexa Arts Council considers a variety of types of art. Exhibits must be family friendly. You will be asked to indicate whether you would like to propose a solo show or joint show with another artist or two. Be prepared to share the approximate amount of wall space your show would fill. You will also need to submit photos of your work as well as a short biography and artist statement.

Step 3.Submit your application

Step 4.Selection and notification

The Lenexa City Hall Art Gallery schedules exhibits approximately 8-15 months in advance. The Lenexa Arts Council typically reviews applications in late summer and extends invitations to artists to exhibit in the gallery the following year. Additional meetings to review applications are held on an as-needed basis to fill openings.

Rules for displaying art

  • Final art list, including title, medium, and price, must be submitted two weeks prior to installation. Value of art must be listed, even if the art is not for sale (NFS).
  • The artist must deliver art to City Hall and unpack it at the agreed upon date and time.
  • Hanging pieces must be backed with secured, sturdy hanging wire (D-rings or eyelet screws and sturdy wire attached horizontally across the back of the piece). The gallery’s hanging system does not work with sawtooth hooks or other small hooks or wire loops on the backs of frames.
  • Hanging art must be framed, when applicable. Art on canvas is not required to be framed, but edges must be finished. Tighten the wire so that the stretched wire sits approximately 3” below the top edge of the art and the hanger does not show when the art is hung.
  • 3-D art must sit securely on own or have attachments to secure it.
  • Artist’s name and title of the piece should be marked on the back (or bottom) of the piece.
  • Art must remain displayed for the entire show, unless approved by the LAC, and may be removed only by a member of the Lenexa Arts Council.
  • Each submission must be original designs created by the artist submitting them. By submitting your work, you are agreeing that it does not contain any third party copyrighted materials.
  • Art must be family friendly with no images of nudity, of a sexual nature, graphically violent or depicting gore, no use of or depiction of illegal substances, and no political messaging. The jury committee reserves the right to deny any artwork for any reason.
  • You retain the copyright of each submission and the right to use the artwork for your personal use. However, you grant the City a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable and non-exclusive license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display submitted artwork or parts thereof for advertising or promotional purposes in any media now existing or subsequently developed. You may or may not be credited when the artwork is used.

Installation

Our gallery volunteer team assists with installation. The Lenexa Arts Council prepares labels and signage (unless exhibitors wish to provide their own). Once an exhibit is scheduled, the Arts Council Liaison will follow-up to coordinate details.

Art sales

Interested buyers will contact and pay artists directly, however artists should inform Lenexa Arts Council of sales, so “sold” notification may be placed on the art.

Lenexa Arts Council does not take a percentage of sales. However, artists may choose to donate a percentage of sales to The Lenexa Foundation for Lenexa Arts Council art shows. Donations are tax deductible.

Reception or art talk

The Lenexa Arts Council offers the opportunity for exhibiting artists to host an opening reception and an art talk. These are optional activities. The Arts Council liaison will provide additional information and coordinate with the artist when scheduling an exhibit.
